i'm about to (re)install freebsd 6.2.. i really want to use xfce 4.4
on it, and i also want to use the latest samba version on it (without
having to compile)
question 1::i know that you can (manually) download the (precompiled
binary) packages from pointyhat, but will this also work?
# setenv PACKAGESITE ftp://Pointyhat_IP_Address/Latest/
# pkg_add -r xfce4.4 && pkg_add -r samba_x.x.x
i find very few references to it:
http://clusty.com/search?query=setenv+PACKAGESITE+http%3A%2F%2Fpointyhat.freebsd.org%2F&sourceid=Mozilla-search
the one i most want to trust is
http://www.oreillynet.com/sysadmin/blog/2005/06/creating_a_data_mirror.html
question 2::i'm assuming that pointyhat is as trustworthy as the iso's
themselves, is this the case?
question 3::what's the point of realeasing the
"6.2-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso" full of very very olde packages? same
with ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-6.2-release/Latest/
??
question 4::does pointyhat's "latest" get dumped to these to places?
yes or no? if no, why not?
